overhaul ball question

Hey everyone, I have a question. so, if you need about 210 pounds on that overhaul ball to keep the crane cable tight, would you need, like, 840 pounds on a four part (double sheave) setup?

How does that even work? Do most cranes have extra weights for this? Just a newbie operator here, trying not to mess up the cable! Cheers!

Yep, you'd likely need around 840 pounds on a four-part line to get that same tension because each part of the cable shares the load.
 
No, you don't multiply the weight like that, the load on the overhaul ball doesn't scale linearly with the parts of line. If 210 lbs is what you need for a single line to keep tension, that same 210 lbs should still do the trick on a four part line, because the ball's weight is on the dead end side not divided across the sheaves like a load would be.

Hold on there, while the exact overhaul ball weight might not scale in a perfectly simple multiplication for every setup, you will definitely need a heavier ball for a four part line than the 210 pounds used for a single. That original 210 pounds just will not cut it with all the extra friction from more sheaves and more rope you are dealing with to keep things running right.
