I scored a pretty good deal on a 10-ton 57' RO crane mounted on a GMC with the 8.2. I read people call it hate.2. Why? Well, it needs new tires, brakes, and I'll replace an odd-looking clamp on the lifting cable, but otherwise it checked out fine during my test. The jib is coming off since I won't be doing much high work anyway. What else do I need to work on? TIA.

Coz it's not a true diesel, more like a gas engine turned diesel... so its not very popular and parts can be a bit hard to find. Aside from the tires, brakes, and clamp, check the hydraulics for leaks, make sure the cable and pulleys are in good shape, and test the outriggers and PTO. Pulling the jib makes sense if you dont need the height. Sounds like you're almost good to go.

How's the engine running under load? That 8.2 can be temperamental, so watch temps and oil pressure. Also, how's the wiring? Old rigs like that sometimes have brittle or hacked-up harnesses

Besides tires, brakes, and that clamp, I'd check all hydraulic lines for dry rot or weeping, grease the boom and pivot points, and inspect the outrigger pads and welds

I get what most say about it, but I think it's too much. Sure, the torque is a joke for larger hauls, but it's still not too bad.

All recomendations you got are good and I'd also check the electrical system. It can take a beating
